Online DBS Checks

A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check is a criminal record check used by employers and organizations to verify an individual's past criminal history. It helps ensure that people are suitable for roles, especially those involving children or vulnerable adults, by revealing any convictions, cautions, reprimands, or warnings.

Types of DBS Checks:

Basic DBS Check: This is a simple check of unspent convictions and cautions.

Standard DBS Check: This reveals any spent or unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and warnings held on the Police National Computer.

Enhanced DBS Check:
This includes the same information as a Standard check, plus any additional information held by local police forces.

Enhanced DBS Check with Barred Lists:  This type of check is used for roles working with children or vulnerable adults and includes information from the DBS barred lists.

Basic DBS Check

A Basic Disclosure is a type of criminal record check that shows whether the applicant has any unspent convictions or conditional cautions. Anyone who currently works or is planning to work in England or Wales can have a Basic DBS Basic Check.

Applicants living or working in Scotland can have a Disclosure Scotland Basic Check. A conviction is deemed spent after a certain period of time has elapsed. This period varies depending on the severity and nature of the offence, as well as the length of the sentence received. A conditional caution is deemed spent after three months.

Standard DBS Check

A Standard DBS Check (formerly a Standard CRB Check) is one of the four main types of criminal record checks that reveal any spent or unspent convictions, cautions, final warnings or reprimands the applicant has.

A person will be eligible for a Standard DBS if they are undertaking a role listed in the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975.

This includes a number of positions, professions, licences and activities (see the DBS website for details).

Enhanced DBS Check

Enhanced DBS Checks (also known as Enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) Checks, and previously known as Enhanced CRB Checks) are the highest level of DBS Check available and are generally required for positions that involve working with vulnerable groups, such as children or vulnerable adults and the elderly.

Enhanced DBS Checks can only be requested by a company, not an individual. This is due to the protected nature of criminal information in the UK, and ensures that only those who are eligible are able to access this data.
